About

Del corazon de Jesucristo is a medical ministry that has developed from a short mission’s trip to the Dominican Republic in 1986 taken by Steve Dorsey. At that time, Dr. Steve Dorsey, Director of del corazon, had yet to begin his medical training.  

This initial mission’s trip provided the necessary inspiration, vision, and ultimate resulting goal for Dr. Dorsey. He and his wife, Julie, have now dedicated their lives to the development of this ministry: a ministry in the Dominican Republic to provide hope through salvation in Christ and change lives for an eternity.

The vision of del corazon continues to evolve and expand, however the focus remains the same: evangelism through medicine, education and sports.

The vision of del corazon involves a medical center, a Christian school and a recreation center.

Primary care, urgent and emergency services, specialty clinics and HIV/AIDS hospice care will make the medical center a focal point of the surrounding communities and open the door for physical and spiritual healing.

The school provides a Christ-centered education encouraging mental, spiritual, and physical development, fostering hope and confidence, and producing future leaders of the community.

A wide range of sports and activities will be available at the recreation center. The recreation center will provide a location where all members of the community can come together in a safe, positive environment.

Medical

Our partnership with FAME has led to the construction of a healthcare facility on our own campus.  We provide primary and specialized care as well as low cost medicines for the people of El Catey and the surrounding communities. 

Throughout the year we are visited by many healthcare providers who help us meet the physical needs of our community.  We also travel to other areas and conduct medical, dental and vision outreaches. 

Medical students have the opportunity to spend a one month rotation with us in El catey or they may choose to assist us in performing sports physicals for the AZ Diamondbacks baseball academy in Santo Domingo.

Education

Our goal is to supplement the already existing educational system in our area.  We reinforce reading, writing, math and other skills using lessons and stories from the Bible as instructional material.  We identify leaders and encourage them to participate in teaching their peers.  We also plan to have a computer lab and library to enhance learning, growth, and development.

Sports

In the Dominican Republic, everyone plays baseball.  Actually, they will play anything.  We encourage and participate in physical activity on a regular basis.  We have an exercise room as part of our health facility.  We have the only baseball field in El Catey and have started the first little league program.  We also have plans for the addition of basketball and volleyball courts.  We look forward to having a place where families can play together in a safe, positive environment.
