Ministries
The key purpose for all of the HCM ministries is to share the good news about Jesus Christ with others and to help believers in Christ grow in their faith. This work is being done through:
- Fifty-seven churches each with their own pastors seeing to the spiritual needs in their communities
- An annual three-day Christian convention held in Fond Parisien
- Training seminars for pastors, elders and teachers
- Instruction on the Bible and Christian living in our schools • Vacation Bible Schools and seminars put on by visiting mission teams
“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord God is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor, He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion – to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.” Isaiah 61:1-3
Education
Receiving an education in Haiti is a coveted privilege. HCM seeks to make an education accessible to the children in the areas their churches are located. In Haiti, children attend kindergarten for three years, elementary school for six and then high school for seven. HCM currently has fifty-three schools and about 10,250 students.
Port-au-Prince Schools
In Port-au-Prince, HCM has been educating children in kindergarten through their last year of high school for years in four buildings. All of these buildings were damaged in the January 2010 Earthquake so for now classes are being held in the courtyards under tents until repairs can be made. At the end of their high school career, all students must take a national exam. HCM’s students ranked second in the nation based on their performance on the exam.
Village Schools
HCM’s second-largest school is in Fond Parisien. There, children from kindergarten through high school are receiving an education; the younger ones in the morning and the older ones in the afternoon. Plans are being made to build a larger school in that area. Most of the other schools are held in church buildings. Some have separate classrooms while others simply have classes dispersed in the main building. Many of them are pretty rustic. but they all are educating children that would otherwise have no chance to attend school.
Translation School
The Superior Institute of Translation and Interpretation was opened in 1999 for high school graduates. Due to damage done during the earthquake, the school had to be closed for some time but is opening up again this fall. Many excellent speakers of English have left its campus to obtain jobs in all sorts of fields and to assist with many non-profit organizations and missions to help their fellow Haitians. With its low fees and scholarship opportunities, this school allows young people who might not otherwise have the chance to pursue higher education to do so.
Medical Christ For All Health Center
The HCM clinic, “Christ For All Health Center”, serves a population of 80,000 people who have very few other options for healthcare. The center, staffed with Haitian physicians, nurses, assistants and lab technicians operates a day clinic Monday through Friday. It remains open 24 hours a day to provide inpatient care and emergency services. A fully stocked pharmacy and a lab allow patients to get much of what they need all in one place. The clinic is frequented by visiting medical teams that at times provide more specialized care.
Formosa Obstetrics and Gynecology Center
The OB/GYN center, located next to the health center, was built in 2008 as a cooperative effort with Project Haiti Heart and the Taiwanese government. It contains a delivery room, consultation room, operating room, ten-bed patient room, sterilization room, storage space, bathrooms and showers. It was built so that C-sections and other life-saving surgeries could be performed on site rather than having to send patients to Port-au-Prince. While we do not yet have a Haitian physician who can perform these surgeries, visiting American surgical teams have been able to use the facility to perform a variety of surgeries. What an incredible thing it is to now have one of the best operating rooms around stocked with all the necessary equipment and supplies! Haitian midwives and doctors deliver many babies in that building as well.
Mobile Clinics
When medical teams visit HCM they often hold mobile clinics in the various HCM churches through the countryside. The patients they see have no other healthcare available to them in their area. The teams take all their medication with them and often prepare to treat dozens of children for worms and scabies among other things. What a wonderful way to show the people of Haiti’s far flung villages that we have not forgotten about them and we care about their wellbeing! Often teams take along bags of rice and other donations to give to the people.
The Future
Many of the dreams we have had regarding our medical work are now a reality thanks to the help and generosity of many individuals and organizations. We therefore have no reason to stop dreaming big. We are currently making plans to build a hospital on land we have purchased in Fond Parisien. Emergency services are a huge need there as we are located along a busy highway so we want to enhance our ability to meet those needs. We also want to be able to host more specialized foreign physicians and care for more sick patients. To meet another need that Haiti has, we also hope to incorporate a medical school in the facility.
Feeding
Nutrition Centers
We operate nine nutrition centers that feed around 5,200 children. Some of these centers are located in one of our schools, while others function solely as feeding centers. The children are usually given the typical Haitian meal of rice and beans.
Food Distribution
When areas are facing particularly difficult times or when a request is made by a pastor or when a specified donation is made, we distribute bags of rice, beans cooking oil and other food staples to families in need. This year because of the earthquake we have distributed more food than usual. In addition to distributing over 200 fifty-pound bags of rice as well as beans and oil we also were blessed with 6,364 boxes of food from “Kids Against Hunger” that we were able to give out.
Orphanage
Wholehearted Orphanage
Several years ago HCM leadership would never have thought we would have an orphanage. That was not in their plans. But evidently it was in God’s plans and in August of 2010 HCM openned the Wholehearted Orphanage. For now five orphans live with house parents - Marcelin and Lucia and their two sons in a rented house within walking distance of the HCM compound in Fond Parisien. It is a small start, but for these children and for this family who lost their home in Port-au-Prince during the earthquake it is a huge blessing.
A Future Known Only to God
The need for homes for orphans is incredible in Haiti. It is our hope that not too far in the future we can give more of these needy children their own place to call home. The chance to help those at Wholehearted Orphanage came as a result of the passion, generous donations and work of a few supporters. God led those people to get this project going. We trust He will lead others to cause it to grow.
