What you must know before you go

Personal Conduct Policies
Conduct is to be that expected of a Christian person - willing to give and take and maintain the spirit of unity and harmony of the group, to extend politeness and courtesy to those with whom we come in contact (missionaries, nationals, team leaders, team members). A positive attitude is expected!
No smoking or tobacco of any form, illegal drugs, or alcohol.
You will be expected to acclimate to the host culture. This may mean eating food you are unfamiliar with or participating in foreign customs.
Due to cultural considerations, a public display of affection is not acceptable.
It is important that you dress in a neat, clean, and modest fashion. Your appearance is important not only for the missionary’s reputation, but in the way the local people will perceive you. You may have to submit to certain restrictions regarding dress (not wearing shorts), body piercing (only acceptable piercing is small earrings for ladies), and hair restrictions (hair length for the guys).
Communication with Friends/Family
There may be little to no chance for you to make personal contact with your family once you've arrived in the country, due to unpredictable technology!
Let your friends/family know that you will not be contacting them while you are out of the country. Once your team has safely arrived at the host mission, the team leader will make every effort to contact the FAME office and let them know of your safe arrival. The FAME office will then post an update in the "Latest News" section on the home page of this site.
Trip participants may not ask the host missionary to use his/her phone, ask to stop and use a public phone/internet, or stop to purchase a phone.
If there is an emergency at home, your friends/family will have contact information for the FAME representative and mission staff. We ask that they only call FAME in case of an emergency.
If there is an emergency during your trip, we will make every effort to reach the emergency contact you provided on your application.
Electronics/Electricity
If you have a personal cell phone that you are taking, it may not have the capability of making calls outside the U.S. Please contact your cell phone provider to establish this type of capability before you leave.
Electricity is very unpredictable. You will not be able to use hairdryers in the mission compound. Please be sure to pack international electricity adaptors, as U.S. cords may not work.
If, after reading this, you agree to the above FAME policies, please fill-out our online application.
